Am I addicted to my TV?
Well here I am writing my first blog and I was wondering what would be worthy topic to write my thoughts about?
In this age of able TV and internet and my busy life, TV and surfing on the internet has come to rule my life for most part. Indeed my whole day is probably spent in front of some form of tube- my monitor when I am working (I am a software engineer by profession) and when I am not working its either browsing on the internet or watching TV. Even when I am working out in the gym...behold there is the mounted TV showing Larry King in his suspenders or Bill O' Reilly ranting about the democrats in particular Hillary Clinton.
I am not trying to say here that TV or Internet has been a bad influence for me.... Growing up, my tv watching was regulated...I couldnt watch tv after 9 PM. Although my parents did make exceptions for me when I wanted to watch "The A Team", Knight Rider, Hawaii 5'0. As an east indian kid, I did grow up fond of bollywood movies. There too my parents regulated my tv watching... I got to see all Amitabh Bachchan movies since they were pure unadulterated movies showing an angry protogonist trying to right the wrongs of the society. Most Indian movies in the 80's were clean compared to what you see in bollywood now. There are exceptions though. There are good movies in bollywood too....Thats another thread for me to write about is Hollywood better than Bollywood?
Growing up, I did not really understand why my parents tried to regulate my tv watching, but now I see their point of view. There is always a necessity to watch over your children while they grow up and instill in them the proper values and discipline. Although I dont know if I were to watch an adult movie or a show growing up would make me a different person. Thats for psychologists to research on human behavior. Atleast the lessons that I have taken is I dont treat women as "objects" or believe in promsicuity as you see on VH1 or BET. Another thing I probably have come to realise is that life is not easy and things dont come easy in life. Again some are lucky or "blessed" to have it easy. My parents atleast didnt have to regulate my internet access because it didnt exist growing up. One less headache for them I guess.
TV programming especially on VH1 or MTV is pretty funny...We get to see the life of the rich and famous kids like Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton and for every subject matter in life they seem to have an opinion. Makes me believe Aristotle and Socrates were fools and the "REAL" philosopher are the Hilton Sisters. Well atleast the girls had an head start with all the wealth they have but atleast they have been smart enough to have their own tv shoes, fashion clothing, perfumes etc to make an investment of it, rather than squander it off like most rich spolit kids....
Am I sounding like a FAIR AND BALANCED reporter talking about Hilton girls? What say you Bill O' Reilley.
As far as getting REAL NEWS on TV, I rarely get any. The popular cable news on CNN or Fox News is recycled and very US centric. Its difficult to see what the world thinks of the US for american audience. On top of that White house disburses tax money to put out news favorable to administration policy. Just ask the talk show host Amstrong who got money as part of "No Child Left Behind" program. I have come to read news on BBC which I consider the only media organization that puts out atleast 2 different views. WSJ is another paper I like to read although most of my WSJ newspapers I have thrown out without opening to read because of lack of time.
There are lots of good shows on TV like the History Channel, BBC, PBS, I just wish I had the time to enrich my knowledge and broaden my horizons
